Why we are not offering compostable packaging?
Why we are not offering compostable packaging
I have done a lot of research as well as talked to my suppliers before deciding on the packaging for our Disposable tablets.
We were offered PLA packaging which is advertised as 100% compostable
What does this mean?
PLA is a compostable bioplastic derived from plant sugars. PLA stands for polylactic acid. It can be made from any sugar, such as corn starch, cassava, sugar cane, or sugar beet.
Sounds fantastic but….
How can you recycle PLA packaging
PLA disposables can biodegrade in under 12 weeks in commercial composting, which provides the perfect balance of microbes, moisture, and warmth. The temperature must be at least 90 degrees
PLA packaging should NOT be placed in standard recycling bins which collect paper and plastics as those materials go to a different type of sorting facility.
PLA packaging negatively impacts the quality of mechanical recycling if you put it in the recycling bin. In many cases the whole load ends up going to landfill.
PLA does NOT break down in landfill.
PLA Compostable packaging is not expected to break down when discarded in the environment
Home composting conditions vary with the skill of the householder, but there are a few successful tries when using Hot Compost Bins.
You can't put PLA in your typical home composter and get it to rot.
